Colored Light Therapy

As scientists discover more uses for light, new treatments are devised that use various wavelengths and colors. Colored light therapy can be used for a variety of different purposes. For example, one of the most common uses for this type of therapy is for treating emotional issues. The use of colored light for emotional therapy is called chromotherapy which should not be confused with regular light therapy which is called phototherapy. Chromotherapy uses different colors to heal different conditions. For example, green light is thought to ease depression, regulate the pituitary gland and calm irritability. Blue light on the other hand is thought to reduce blood pressure and calm the nervous system.

Other colors used in chromotherapy are red, yellow and even white. Red is thought of by many to be a stimulating color. Red can be used to stimulate excitement and increase vitality. Many experts believe yellow light has a cleansing and balancing effect. In the ream of chromotherapy, white light is used to purify and regenerate. White light is also used in phototherapy for the treatment of SAD or seasonal affective disorder. The light used for this purpose is designed to mimic bright sunlight without hurting the eyes or skin.

When using white light for SAD the average treatment is done at home and simply consists of sitting in front of a light box designed for this purpose. Your doctor can tell you how often you need to use your light box and how it should be used. On the topic of using colored lights for various healing purposes, did you know they can also be used for skin conditions? Blue light is a popular treatment for acne while red and/or amber light is used to smooth away fine lines and impart a more youthful experience to the skin.

Even though colored light therapy isn't a mainstream treatment, it is becoming a lot more popular these days. More people are discovering the many benefits of light for treating emotional and physical disorders. If you are suffering from SAD, acne or just want younger looking skin you should consider the use of light therapy for yourself. In addition to consulting with your doctor, researching on the Internet can lead you to plenty of information and even products that can be used at home.
