Postpartum Depression Light Therapy
One innovative treatment for postpartum depression is light therapy. Postpartum depression light therapy may be an effective remedy for some women. Many experts believe that this form of depression results from hormone fluctuations following pregnancy. While light therapy may not be effective in all cases, it may work for certain patients. One reason for this may be due to the effects of light on serotonin production. Not just any light will work for this purpose. You will need either direct sunlight or a light box.
It is not always possible to get the recommended amount of direct sunlight every day. This is one of the reasons some people suffer from seasonal affective disorder. If you already suffer from SAD then you may have a difficult time during the postpartum period if it is during the winter months. The first step is to speak with your doctor if you think you could be suffering from postpartum depression. If you are prone to depression you may want to speak to your doctor before your due date. Lining up treatment options beforehand can really help if this problem does arise. Light therapy is just one of the available treatment options.
The most common light therapy treatment is the use of a light box. A light box is a device that emits bright full spectrum light. You will need to sit in front of your light box for a certain amount of time each day. There are all kinds of boxes and lamps on the market today designed for treating SAD, depression, insomnia and even jet lag. Some of them are large models for use at home while others are miniature models for traveling. You can even buy alarm clocks that use full spectrum light. Try using full spectrum bulbs around your home for even bigger benefits.
Postpartum depression light therapy is something to consider if you are suffering from mild to moderate PPD. However no treatment should be implemented without an evaluation by your doctor first. Your doctor will want to review your symptoms and talk to you about the various treatment options available to you. In some cases it may be necessary to combine other treatments like medication and counseling with light therapy for best results.
