Sadd Light Therapy
SADD stands for seasonal affective depressive disorder and is a condition some people suffer from during the winter months. For this reason it is often called the winter blues. Experts believe this disorder is caused by a lack of sunlight. SADD light therapy can help simulate natural sunlight using special full spectrum light. The symptoms of SADD may include sadness, low energy, sleeping too much or not enough, fatigue, nervousness and irritability to name a few. SADD is a type of depression that seems to clear up in the summer months which led to the conclusion it is directly related to sunlight exposure.
The good news is that with light therapy many patients can find relief. Light therapy often consists of sitting in front of a device called a light box. Light boxes use full spectrum light that is extremely bright, situated in such a way that it does not damage the eyes. Also you are not getting ultraviolet radiation from a light box like you would from sunlight. One of the newest types of light box is called the Blue Lux. This is a new technology that combines high intensity with blue light to create a light therapy method that is much faster and more effective than traditional light therapy.
For example, with a Blue Lux light you can obtain treatment in 15 minutes rather than two hours. Also you don't have to sit directly in front of the Blue Lux light box which gives you greater freedom and flexibility. As long as you are in the same room with the light box you will get the benefits. There are other innovative products that may also help you treat your SADD. Try using full spectrum lightbulbs in all your household lamps, and consider a light therapy alarm clock instead of the traditional clock radio. This type of alarm clock awakens you gradually with light of increasing brightness.
You should never try to administer SADD light therapy without first consulting your doctor. If you think you are suffering from SADD a professional consultation is definitely a must. Your doctor can evaluate your symptoms and tell you whether or not you are a good candidate for light therapy. Sometimes light therapy may be used alongside other treatments like medication, counseling or lifestyle changes.
